What I Learned at my Company Convention

n651355689_664565_5739I just got returned from four days in Wilkes-Barre, PA where I was attending my company convention.  It always amazes me how much personal development is involved in this short time.  Following are some “pearls of wisdom” that I brought home with me that I hope will affect you as much as they did me:

The #1 factor of how your business will turn out is how you think.

Think about it (no pun intended).  If you wake up every morning thinking that nobody wants to hear from you, are you going to make any calls?  If you don’t make any calls, who are you going to connect with to get into your business.

If you think that you’re a loser or that you have nothing to offer anyone, what are you going to put out there.  NOTHING.  And if you put out nothing, guess what you get back.

Keep your thoughts positive and flowing in the right direction and your business will grow. It can’t help it !!

The most important lesson on success is learning how to fail.

Hmmm, sound confusing.  Actually, it’s not.  You’ve heard the stories.  How many doors did Colonel Sanders have to knock on before someone liked his chicken recipe.

How many times did Abraham Lincoln fail before he went on to be one of the greatest, most talked about presidents of all time.

Babe Ruth struck out 1,330 times in his career.  But he also ranked #3 on the all time home run list with 714.  He was often referred to as the most favorite baseball player of all time.

How many times have you struck out.  Did you top his record??  Then keep on going and keep on moving forward to the hits.  They are there and they will come.

The stories go on and on.  There’s no way that failure cannot be a part of success.  The hardest part is getting back up after a failure and doing it again!

Don’t focus on the problem, but on the solution

This scenario became clear to me driving home from fling.  Went through a buggy patch and had a few bugs literally become distractions on my windshield.  One landed right in my line of sight and before I cleared it off I was looking at it.  YUK!  It was awful.  Blood and guts everywhere.  He landed so loud that I think I heard a little voice coming from him.

Here’s what I noticed.  When I looked directly at that bug, the road ahead of my became very fuzzy.  I knew that if I continued to focus on that bug on my windshield that I would end up like that bug on the back of a semi in front of me.

You can’t focus on a problem that’s in your face without having a disaster happen in your future.  Stop looking at the problems.  Focus more on the big picture and you will realize just how small those icky bugs are.

And, finally, the best “pearl” that I brought home with me that will be on my dream board until it happens came from our guest speaker, Michael Clouse.  It goes like this:

Someone, someday is going to look at your family tree.  They will point to you and say “this is where things changed.”

I don’t know where you’ve come from or the history of YOUR family.  I can tell you that I have some skeletons in my closet, however….

YOUR PAST DOES NOT EQUAL YOUR FUTURE.

If you come from a family that is less than glowing, change things.  Make things different for the generations that will come after you.

What a great legacy to leave for your children and grandchildren.

This is just the tip of the iceberg and will be sharing much more as time goes on, but for now, take these points one at a time and work on them.  You will grow from them and your life will become more fulfilling!

  2. Hi Debbie,

    Thank you for this post.

I will be sending it to my entire team.

It is funny that some people focus on the negative and are happy being a victim and other people have the ability to re-frame any problem into a lesson or even an opportunity.

    What’s that saying?

“If you think you can or you think you can’t you are right?”

Keep up the great work. I always enjoy reading your material.

You have a choice so, make it a better than terrific day!

  8. Debbie,

Wonderful post and thanks for sharing!

I went to our Regional Convention this past weekend in Atlanta and man I’m glad I did. At first I wasn’t sure that I wanted to go but in the end it was well worth the money and the time. Without going I would have never met some of the most wonderful people and created the bonds I made along the way.

As one of our Team Leaders Jeff Olsen says: You have to stay Consistent, Persistent over a Long Period of Time in order to be Successful.

I love your quote on this post too. “Someone, someday is going to look at your family tree. They will point to you and say “this is where things changed.” Just keep going!

I totally agree Chris. When I saw Michael Clouse that part of his talk stopped me in my tracks. How cool will it be to break a cycle of dysfunction! Love that too!
