The 90 Day Challenge You Don’t Want to Miss.

August 29, 2009 by Debbie

Here it is.  The challenge you will want to be a part of, the challenge you will want to follow, and the challenge you will simply not want to miss! Do you sometimes feel like a hamster on a wheel?  Like you’re going nowhere very quickly, doing too much and getting too little done?

He who gains a victory over other men is strong;
but he who gains a victory over himself is all powerful.

Here’s the deal.  I commented on a post written by Mike Litman a few days ago on Facebook.  I love Mike’s tagline, “You Don’t Have to Get it Right, You Just Have to Get it Going.”  Here’s the back and forth between us:

Mike’s original post:  Join me on the war against scatteredness – From the great rapper @llcoolj One of the main key’s to success is total focus

Debbie:  Where do I sign up…..

Mike:  Absolutely right. I spent 7 years being scattered. I see to many people still scattered today. Tons. It’s gotta stop.  Small goals. Celebrate your small victories. So important.

Debbie:  In your opinion, what is your number one suggestion for getting unscattered. I think this is a topic that is so important.

Mike:   Debbie, start with a SINGLE focus. I see people who have spent most of their lives as employees trying to build 2 or 3 part time businesses at 1 time. It’s a joke.  Find that single focus and celebrate your tiny victories. We look at small victories as small vs looking at them and saying “What if my audience was 5 times bigger, what would this look like then…”  Also, we have to earn the right to succeed. Don’t let insignificance early on creates doubts in you.   Thanks for your question Debbie.

Debbie:  Thanks Mike! You answered my question beautifully. I struggle with this every day. I have been an employee most of my adult life so I constantly feel like I have to multi-task to get enough done in the time allotted if I want my business to grow.   I am going to ‘focus on doing one thing at a time to completion. I just spent an hour finishing a blog post and really fought the urge to fit something else in when it popped in my head. This feels good.  Thanks for your words of wisdom. You just changed this former scattered person to a focuser! =)

Mike:  Start using the ‘1% Principle’. Decide on 2 or 3, no more, maybe less, actions you can take each day. Touch your business daily.  Many employees in their desire to own their own business buy into gimmicks and bad assumptions.  An employee mind can’t build a successful entreprenerial business.  It’s a different ‘mind’.  Focus more on your activity, not your results for the next 3 months.    Activity breeds focus, confidence and momentum.

YOU can do it. You and I know you can.

superwoman-300x286OK, it’s confession time.  I’m going to confess that I am and have been my whole life pretty unfocused and scattered.  I will start out on a project and blink, and it’s midnight and I’ve been tweeting or facebooking all night long, now I’m beat, and I got NOTHING done that I had planned.

I believe that I am not the only person in the Internetwork Marketing World who has a very clearly diagnosed case of Internet ADD.

Come on, we’re all friends here.  I’m not seeing enough hands going up…..

OK, let’s take this little test.  I know, nobody likes tests, but just humor me for a minute.  I promise it will be quick, otherwise I’ll be off on another project before it’s done.

Tell me if you’ve ever experienced any of the following:

  • You’re working on your next blog post when you hear that all too familiar sound.  The sub sound of your tweet deck.  Hey, it’s your buddy from Australia, well, we gotta talk now, our schedules rarely coincide.
  • You’re just going to sit down to do your next video that’s long overdue and your phone rings.  You simply must answer it.  It may be a prospect.  Next thing you know you’re at the local pub with your best friend talking about how bad the economy is.
  • You’re doing your social networking, tweeting away, and all of a sudden you realized that your kids have put themselves to bed, and the return calls back to your prospects, well, needless to say it’s much too late now.  You’ll do it tomorrow.
  • You’ve promised yourself you would work on your autoresponder series tonight.  After all, your prospects are getting cold and you’ve not mailed them in two weeks.  The next morning you have a perfectly weeded garden and your prospects are still hanging.

Michael Clouse said it perfectly at our company convention.  Ohhh, it’s shiney.  That’s our distraction.  Anything shiney, or what we perceive to be shiney.

Here’s what I think, and I’m only speaking for myself here.  I’ve been an employee for most of my adult life. Being in the legal field, mostly working for busy partners, I have to be ready to change gears at the drop of a hat. My focus changes like the wind.  The “You Want It When” slogan with the little laughing guy becomes my mantra.  I come to work calm and rested and before I know it, I’m juggling more projects than I care to think about.

Bringing that mentality into your home based business is a sure formula for disaster.  You can’t possibly try to balance several projects at once and get anything done right.

Are you ready???  Here’s the rules:

90 Days – One project a day to completion.

Can you even imagine what your business would look like if at the end of 90 days you had 90 things accomplished to completion?

So whose with me.  Are you up for it!  I know I am and I challenge you to come along for the ride!   Leave me a comment below and let’s keep commenting and moving forward for 90 solid days.

Think you can’t do it.  Just watch this every time you need a little motivation.

Great stuff Debbie. When I get back into town this week, I’m going to take this on. I think this is a great idea to keep people focused. I really like how this challenge keeps the goals o a micro level that slowly builds and builds.

  4. Hey Debbie,
That is solid. I am going to get one thing done today. I am going to get my next blog post up.
that nugget about multi-tasking is real. Employee-minded people rave about how they are great multi-taskers. I got to be the boss and do one thing. Wish I could say more but the comment on your blog isn’t the one thing I have to do today. Ciao,
